Aloha!

We had another very productive week last week in our classroom full of enthusiastic learners!  Here are just a few of the exciting topics we covered:

• We began greeting one another using different languages.  Try greeting your student with a "Bonjour" or "Aloha!"
• We learned the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters.  All students are now expected to begin their names with an uppercase letter and the rest need to be lowercase letters.  Please reinforce this at home!
• We learned about consonants and vowels and we learned that every word has a vowel.  Students are now encouraged to check each word they write to make sure it has at least one vowel.
• In math, we learned about phone numbers, continued counting up and back on the number line and number grid, and we began learning number facts and number fact strategies.  
• We began handwriting by learning about correct posture and pencil grip.  Refer to the handouts from open house so that you can remind your student about their pencil grip at home! 
• We learned about the difference between living and non-living things and we went outside to search for living things.  Ask your student about the many living things they found around our school!
• The author's in our classroom continued to impress me with their eagerness to write stories!  Some of our author's have had a difficult time thinking of topics to write about.  Every time you do something exciting with your family, please take the time to point out what a fantastic story this event would make!
• We began to learn some of the literacy workboard stations students will be doing during our reader's workshop block and the students practiced working independently.
• Students began to contribute work to their portfolios, which will be shared with you at the end of the school year!

It was another fun and busy week in room 105!
